The document is called\u00a0<em>Ad resurgendum ad Christo<\/em> \u2014 To rise with Christ. It reiterates Church teaching about death and resurrection, in particular the preference for burial \u00a0but\u00a0allowing the practice of cremation.<\/p>\n<p>In England and Wales the majority of funerals lead to cremation &#8211; and\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.srgw.info\/CremSoc4\/Stats\/\">figures<\/a> suggest that this is the pattern for Catholics too. The concern of the Instruction is the need for the cremated remains to be &#8216;laid to rest&#8217;. In England and Wales this will usually mean burial. The Instruction notes that it is not part of Catholic tradition or practice for ashes to be scattered, nor to be preserved in jewellery or mementos.<\/p>\n<p>The Department for Christian Life and Worship previously issued guidance on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liturgyoffice.org.uk\/Resources\/OCF\/index.shtml#Ashes\">Burial of Ashes<\/a> in 2008 and also placed the liturgical texts for the interment\u00a0of ashes on\u00a0the Liturgy Office website.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0Congregation for\u00a0the Doctrine of the Faith released on 25 October 2016 an Instruction on Cremation and the Burial of Ashes.
